Wizards,
With the next upcoming Test Realm, we're introducing a major update for our Spellwrighting system. Spellements and Spellwrighting were created as an opportunity for additional customization of your Wizard's spells and deck, while also giving players goals and rewards for engaging in content throughout the Spiral. With over a hundred zones, dungeons, raids, and ongoing events, we aimed to provide a persistent progress track that would carry forward regardless of how many times you upgraded your gear, leveled up, or moved on to new worlds.
Choosing A New Path – Or All of Them
Our goal with these changes is to give players full access to mix-and-match versions of spells, while reducing the cost of upgrading and filling out the Spellwrighting tree. As part of these changes, Spellwrighting is moving away from a system where you pick a single path, spend all your Spellements, and refund them each time you change content or strategies. Instead, players can invest in any path, and the progress gained is now a permanent part of their Wizard, just like Badges, XP, and levels. This means you’ll eventually be able to unlock each Spellwrighting upgrade, and use any combination of those spells in your deck.
As an example, you can invest in all three paths of Ship of Fools, letting you decide in the moment if you want to deal the most AOE damage, the most damage to a single target, or drain for the heal back, all in your hand of the same deck! We’re eager to give players more freedom for creativity when it comes to deck building, with less binary choices about the deck you are permitted to build.
All Wizards who have already spent Spellements will still have access to their highest unlocked tier, without having to grind to re-earn those customizations. We know how much effort players put into collecting Spellements, and this change does not undo any of that work.
The costs to upgrade spell tiers are being reduced across the board, as follows:
- Tier 2: Reduced from 75 to 50 Spellements
- Tier 3: Reduced from 115 to 100 Spellements
- Tier 4: Reduced from 190 to 150 Spellements
- Tier 5: Reduced from 305 to 200 Spellements
Updated Spellwrighting Interface
Once the update goes live, the next time you open the Spellwrighting interface for a spell, you'll be informed of this update to Spellements, and choose whether to keep your current unlocks, or reset and refund them completely.
If you choose to “Reset”, it will refund you based on the old, higher cost. If you choose to “Keep” your spells as-is, you’ll get refunded any extra Spellements you spent that are no longer required with the reduced cost. For instance, if you previously unlocked Tier 5 for Snow Serpent, and choose to keep these upgrades in place, you’ll still receive 185 Spellements back.
Please note: this is a one-time refund opportunity for each character and spell, so spend carefully moving forward! After you choose to “Keep” or “Reset,” you’ll no longer be able to reset any Spellements spent.
Just like before, when you earn enough Spellements to upgrade a spell to the next tier, you can do so in this same screen. One thing that is new: you can now upgrade directly to any tier if you have enough Spellements to do so, without having to click multiple times for each tier upgrade.
Longer term, these changes open up Spellwrighting to have more paths added, expands deckbuilding options, and avoids pressuring players to refund and move around their Spellements just to optimize around specific encounters, or moving between PvP and standard or advanced modes.
Giving Feedback
Please use the upcoming Test Realm as an opportunity to try the system out, see firsthand how things are changing, and, of course, give us your thoughts about what you do or don't like about these changes. You can discuss these Spellwrighting changes and other updates on the Test Realm section of the official Wizard101 Discord server.
We understand that making changes to your current items, spells, and hard-earned rewards is a task we shouldn't take lightly, so please give us feedback! We have a host of other changes planned for our next update, and you’ll hear more about those in the upcoming Test Realm update notes.
As always: we greatly appreciate your ongoing feedback and collaboration as we evolve and grow Wizard101, and we look forward to answering your questions about this change and the many other additions introduced with the upcoming Test Realm.
