As a Member you get:
1. access to ALL worlds (you must still earn your way to those worlds by playing the storyline of the game, but you do not have to purchase those worlds separately)
Much like reading a chapter book, Wizard101 is sequential game play (before you move to level 2 you must complete level 1).  Even if you have purchased a Membership you must first complete all of the quests in one world to be able to move on to the next.  The same thing goes for Access to some of the streets or areas within a world.  For instance, when you've successfully completed the quests for Wizard City you will be given a quest to enter into the next world, Krokotopia.  Once you have your own access there, as long as you have a Membership or have purchased the Premium area with Crowns, you will be able to enter that world freely.

2. Ranked PvP matches (otherwise these would cost Crowns)

3. Ranked Derby races (otherwise these would cost Crowns)

4. Castles & Lands (once you progress through the worlds you can purchase world themed houses)

5. advanced Crafting (once you progress through the worlds you have access to higher level crafting quests)

6. Message Boards (only current Members can post on the official Message Boards)

7. more Chat options* (age restrictions and parental control restrictions apply

8. Gifting capabilities* (*age restrictions and parental control restrictions apply)

9. True Friends* (*age restrictions and parental control restrictions apply)

10. faster Energy regen (your energy for pets and gardening will regenerate twice as fast)

11. larger backpack (you have 120 backpack slots instead of 100)

12. larger friends list (you can have 100 friends instead of 80)

13. faster Crafting timers (your crafting timers are half that of a free to play player)

*age restrictions and parental control restrictions apply

Whether you purchase a Membership or Pay by Area, really depends on how you think you will play the game.

If you plan to push through as much of the content as possible in the shortest amount of time, then a month to month Membership is the best value for you.

If you plan to play several characters over a long period of time, then a 6month or 1year Membership is probably the best value for you.

If you only have a few hours a week to spare, or will hold off playing for long periods of time, then purchasing individual areas is the best value for your time. It allows you to purchase just the next street you need to progress, and once you've purchased an area, it's accessible to all your characters on that account. Purchasing individual areas lets you progress at your own pace without feeling like you have a Membership hanging over your head.

The prices for the individual areas can be found here: https://www.wizard101.com/game/areapricing
If you're not sure, then use the Free to Play portion of the game as your guide. See how fast you move through to the end of Triton Avenue, and gauge your passion and your available time accordingly.
