I have a few ideas for training point buyback. Yes, we have talked about these many times, and I KNOW that the current way to do it is "time versus money", so please don't reply saying this.
The first idea is a very special offer that would be sold through the site. If you bought a minimum of $40 worth of crowns, you would get crowns plus ONE buyback for free, for the life of that account. This way, KI would still be making money on it and we'd get a small reprieve of the cost
The second idea would simply be a month long discount of buyback. According to Central, "As of 27 September 2010, the price to buy back training points is 350 crowns per point after the first three." So, one month, the buyback would only cost 250 crowns per point after the first three. This would make it a bit easier for us to buyback our points but still have a cost to it. perhaps this is something that could happen as a "new year's special". To start off the new year right, you can buy back your points at a discounted cost.
The third idea would be, once the next full world is finished, and we have done every single quest in it (story, side quests, tasks, etc), you would go to Mr Lincoln for a special new quest (which also is a side quest) that would take us back through all of the worlds, performing different tasks. Once we're finished, that character would get a ONE TIME free buyback of all points. The balance here would be the quest would have to be very long and very involved to balance the "time versus money" point of view.
Of course, a fourth idea could be that during the December celebration, if you have collected all the rewards along the way, the final one would be that each wizard would get one free buyback.
Again I will say, I KNOW that it's "time vs money young wizard", but this would be a way to show some leniency for those who would like to redo their spells.
Buyback costs are too steep. I worry about this especially for players on a budget. They could buy food for a week, or buy all their training points back. That's how you know it has gone too far.
I like the free and quest suggestions.
But, if it has to cost something, then I think the cost should be the equivalent of 10 US dollars, maximum. Chances are if someone has misspent training points, they have misspent ALL of their training points. They shouldn't have to pay more for their mistake.
