The Energy you have is your PETS Energy. So why would the gardening be using your pets energy? The gardening and pet energy should be separate. Your pet isn't doing the gardening you are so it should be using your Mana, after all it is magic.

that's KI's way of limiting what can be done in the game. If it used Mana (and you are right, we cast the spells not our pets), there would be no way to balance gardening. Think about it. We could plant 400 plants, then tend them all, blow our mana, drink a potion, refill it, do this until all potions are empty, then head to Wizard City and refill them for minimal gold. I think KI feels gardening/pet training needs to be kept in check. I agree that they should be separate, and I'd be fine if the pet training/gardening "energy" could only be filled the same way they are now. Personally, I still want to see pets get XP from battles and then pets using energy would be virtually a thing of the past

It's not just for pets and is explained at level 12 when learning about gardening. You must choose how to spend that energy...garden or train your pets. Both can be done without any problem at all. I don't see the issue here.
