Fizzling spells costing pips?

So my life friend and i are battling some steam winchers and one of them had casted a myth imp on my friend. Now as you know myth imp gives a dispel to you but my friend had already selected centaur and it fizzled. Then his pips were gone. So what i'm wondering is that do dispels take your pips away when your spell fizzles?

Dispel fizzles are different from other fizzles. When you have a dispel on you what happens is the spell you select is actually cast (thus you lose your pips),
THEN the dispel activates and kills your spell. Normally you wouldn't lose your pips (like when you have black mantle that lowers your accuracy -45%), but dispels work differently.
