|I reached out into the thick darkness and felt a warm, soft hand. I breathed a sigh of relief. It was Tristan. I would not be swallowed up forever in darkness.|
“Where are we?” I asked. I was really scared.
“I think…” Tristan said slowly, “I think we’re going to have to go to Ravenwood School.”
“First things first,” I replied. “Where are we and how do we get out of here?”
Then we hit the hard, cold floor of the place we were in. Lights flashed everywhere. We were somewhere high, the tip of a mountain, and a river of lava flowed down from a pool directly behind them. The sky was pitch black, the floor a gentle tan.
A dragon in a green robe holding a spear advanced toward us. “Um, Tris? That dragon in the puke-colored robe is gonna kill us.”
To our surprise, the dragon lowered his spear and began to speak! “I’m a Draconian, not a dragon. There isn’t much time. Go down the steps behind me and enter the portal to the Basilica. The Spiral Gate is up there. Hurry!” He ran through a door on our right.
“Let’s go,” Tristan said, and ran down the steps until we reached a place called the Atheneum. It was big and had a lot of shops.
“There! That portal!” called out Tristan, pointing to the only working portal in maybe a mile. We leapt through and came out on the other side. Then we ran up a tower until we reached… a door. A very simple, plain door. I yanked on the doorknob. It was locked.
I looked at my brother. “Any ideas?”
Tristan grinned. “Now I know why Mom gave me the funny-looking key,” he stated, pulling out a key that had the same symbol as the door did- A spiral on the handle. But instead of having the letters DS, it had the letters WC.
“Says Wizard City,” he said proudly, and unlocked the door with it. It swung open to reveal a green looking area. We stepped through and locked the door behind us. Where were we?
There were trees all around us. Even the hot sunlight filtering through the leaves was green. Tiny, bright lights flew everywhere, trailing dust that ranged from the colors gold to blue.
Another kid pushed past us, wearing really weird clothing- something between a dress and a suit. “Move, weirdos, I’m heading to Marleybone.” He pulled out a key that looked exactly like ours, but instead of WC on it, it said MB. He unlocked the door with it and stepped out into somewhere that looked like a church. He shut the door, and I could hear him lock it behind him.
A girl ran up. She had different clothes- a short dress with short sleeves and sandals. “Krokotopia, here I come!” She unlocked the door with a key that had the letters KT. A heat wave blasted through the door. “Hotter than I thought,” she grumbled and plunged in. We could only stare.
A deep, rumbling voice made us jump. “Welcome to Wizard City, Destiny DawnRiver and Forest DawnRiver. Follow the Nature Sprite to Headmaster Ambrose.”
