I've wonderd this too. I suspect the answer is far more technical than we would like to think.
But I too have often just wished my wizard stayed in his dorm or house where I left him. Lots of times I am flipping back and forth between wizards, moving things between them through the Shared Bank and every time I switch wizards, I have to port back into the house or dorm or whatever to get to the bank.
