Just wondering, can a pets statistics help you in battle at all? (Not the card that comes with it, the stats in the pet menu)

yes it can :D not pet derby talents but some of the other stuff. my fire bat has pip o plenty so it has a one+ power pip chance

Is it only crown/drop pets? Because I love my unicorn pet but it was baught with gold. Would it still give me boosts?

that i can't awnser, but i will tell you this. once it gets to teen or higher just hope for the best :D
