What does pedigree do?

Everywhere I go I ask what is pedigree used for in a wizard101 pet? And all I am told that it is a worthless number to go next to your pet to look good. But I don't believe that. What Is it really used for.

People have used it to rank pets. This can be true to a certain point. Low pedigree pets have more selfish talents, and these tend to be uncommon talents, which add less to the pedigree (as masterplat wrote).
Epic talents add 5 to the pedigree, so each epic slot on the pet you get it increases the pedigree by that much.
So it can sort of be used to gauge pets in a very rough way.
It is not that helpful though, and does (used for) nothing.
