Are you working on your Level 48 Death Spell quest for Scarecrow?
You don' t have to defeat the Death Oni for this. On this link, you will see the questline for the Level 48 spell:
When you finish this one, and talk to Dworgyn again, he gives you the "Seed of Death".
On that link you can click on "prequests" and "leads to quests" for more info if you need it. And did you get your Level 38 spell? That is required before you can get the Level 48 spell.
