I have the quest to defeat death oni but he is not there when i go i had just fought him before while i was helping a friend but i didnt have the quest yet is that why he doesnt appear?

The dungeon must be reset for you. You either have to enter then exit where you enter, a window should pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit or wait 30 mins. or sign off and back on the game.
