Solid Star in Friends List, what does it mean

I never quite understand why some of my friends have a solid star in my friends list while others have star outlines. Can someone explain the game's friend list star system to me.

The answer you seek is right in the Players Guide

Names in yellow are friends online.

Names in gray are friends offline.

Names with Filled Gold Stars are Best Friends. Click on a star to fill or empty.

If you want the prize, you have to build the ladder rung by rung. There are no shortcuts.

Adding to what Zeke said, if you fill in a star, even if the name starts with Z, it will always be at the top of the list. That way all your "best" friends are at the top and everyone else comes after. I do this to people I play with ALL the time so I know not to delete any of their multiple characters.
