That's just what the display shows when it doesn't have the necessary data on your friend and it usually happens when they haven't logged on for a long time, so it's not really a bug so much as just the system doing its best when there is nothing else it can do. It's been this way for as long as I've been playing (2009) so I think it's safe to assume it's simply a technical shortcoming that can't be solved.
