i just finished the final quest of dragonspyre, which was to defeat malastire (sorry if i spelled it wrong). in past posts people said you had to activate three crystals at once for the door to open, but when i did it with one friend we only had to activate one crystal. was this a glitch or did it change? thanks for any info possible

Yes it has changed (again). You only have to light one crystal to open the (first set of) doors to his chamber. Previously it required 3 people to keep 3 crystals lit at the same time to open those doors.
