Derby And Arena

So I was wondering, I am a Pet Commander and I have about 1500 arena tickets. (I am also a Knight in PvP) Is it possible to get the arena gear with my Pet level or do I have to be a Commander in PvP? I have heard many people say yes, and many people say no.

You must be a PvP commander in order to get PvP commander gear.
