It will depend on what pet you have.
Most likely what will happen is you will get your pet in the hatch - not a forest lord but your friend will probably get another forest lord.
I acutually got the forest lord! It hatched on halloween :) (I had a crabling)

You were very lucky, good for you to actually get a pet you wanted with out having to waste time and gold for hatching. Guest he was your treat for Halloween, no trick there.
I usually have to do a few to get my wanted pet - second time seems to be the charm for me, lol.
