I joined a battle with my wife she was doing the safe house quest where you have to search for Baxter and when I joined one of the monsters gave me a Beneficial spell and from that point I could not cast anything but Buffs on it and then when I started to cast on it No animation or spell was put on it. we died cause I was helpless to hurt it in anyway.. wand spells also was not working on the creature.
*edit* She casted the Death spell for making a Alliance with the enemy and after we killed the other enemy she could attack the mob but I could not.
