Yes, this is how you get it. Just keep trying!
If the Lively Opossum has higher stats (the number by strength, intellect, agility, will and power) than the pet you're using or has a nicer pool of talents than your forrest lord, I would train the baby you make to adult and use that for the next hatch. Even if you get the forrest lord body back it could still be a useful 'between' pet so that when you get the lively opossum it has better stats and talents than you started with.
