You'll gain the ability to use Shadow magic somewhere near the middle of Khrysalis. Most wizards are level 90 or higher when that happens, but it's quest dependent. (You have to do the right quest, no matter what level you're at when you get there.)
Generally speaking, if you start Khrysalis at level 90, you'd do the shadow spells quest around level 95 or so.
Shadow magic is alluded to/mentioned at the start of the second story arch; however, isn't available for players to learn until you reach a certain point in Khrysalis which is the last world in the second story arc.
So if you're just starting out in the first story arc/ you're in Wizard City, shadow magic might seem a long ways off. But if you're already in the second story arch defiantly spend your training points wisely, because there are going to be lots of spells you'll want to learn and experiment with as you approach the third story arc.

If you do the second darkmoor dungeon and get your shadow spell you will get shadow pips, even if you did not get to eclipse tower yet, if you are over leveled this is very possible!
