Nothing, it's random. But the more people in a group, the greater the chances of a pet heal.

There isn't really a trigger. But players have been complaining lately that the rate has changed. This reply from Wizard101 was posted on their Facebook:

"We are reviewing the recent changes to some of the May Cast Healing pet spells. Please be patient while we evaluate the changes again, and determine any additional adjustments that may need to be made."

So THAT'S why my Samoorai's Spritely has been in overdrive lately. KI doesn't need to adjust anymore. Hee hee hee.
