Pets without talents are pretty much pointless. 1st Generation pets, even fully trained, are also pretty useless. If you want a useful pet, you need to put the time into hatching and training pets.

I've gotten some great talents on 1st generation pets, and no luck at all hatching so I don't waste my time and gold anymore. It all depends on the 1st generation pet you have to begin with. One with a lot of 'common' or uncommon' talents I usually don't bother with. I aim for those epic talents.

Some 1st gen pets are great. My Patriotic Leprechaun is extremely useful.
