Wizard101 or Pirate101?

I'm trying to decide what game to buy a membership on; Wizard101 or Pirate101. I've played wizard101 and I kinda like it. But I went on the Pirate 101 site and saw that the graphics are better. I can't really decide which one to choose. I don't know much about Pirate101, can you answer some of my questions?
1. Out of wizard101 or pirate101, which one has more content?
2. Which one has more players?
3. Which one has a better membership?
4. and finally, I just want a cast of votes on which one you all think is better.

Thanks: StormBuffalo

3. I don't understand this question
4. Pirate101 because pvp isn't as broken and gameplay is more fun.

Wizard101 has a lot more content and players. Wizard101 has more side activities like crafting, gardening, and fishing, and has a current level cap of 110 compared to Pirate101's (to be) level cap of 70. And the membership for both games costs the same if that's what you're asking.

I personally like wizard101 better. I just prefer the wizard and magic theme to the pirate theme. I'm also tentative about the future of pirate101 as they haven't really had a major update in 3+ years. It is getting a world/level cap update (of 5 levels, so going from cap of 65 to 70) this summer, but after such a long hiatus who knows if the game will really grow more after this. If you've never played pirate101 though, then obviously there is plenty of content to play with that will be new to you and I think it's worth it to check it out. It's a fun game, it just doesn't have as much as wizard. I would just try the free areas if pirate and see what you think after that.

Don't you think you'll get a slight bias posting this on the Wizard101 website?

Adam is right on the first 3 questions.
What are you looking for in a game/membership?

I prefer Wizard101, but that is mainly because I have loved Wizards before Harry Potter was even written.

Good luck on your adventures in the Spiral both in Pirate and Wizard! I think they are both great games.

W101 has been around longer and has more players than P101.

W101 is easier to buy the various areas with crowns. P101 would cost way too many crowns to buy each area. To play P101, it's best to get a membership there. W101 could go either way in regards to membership.

P101 is a lot of fun to play and I like the combat format much better than W101.

If you decide on membership, you might think about signing up for a monthly membership. That way you play one game for a while, and then you can cancel the membership, and start another membership and play the other game for a while.

I have 2 W101 and 2 P101 accounts. There's no way I can afford a membership on each of them. I've bought most of the areas with crowns on W101, and I use my membership on P101.

#3: Like which membership is worth the money?

1. Out of wizard101 or pirate101, which one has more content?

Wizard101. You can currently level up to level 110 in Wizard; Pirate's max level is currently level 65 but is about to be raised to 70 with some new content added.

2. Which one has more players?

Wizard is the older game, so it had a head start in recruiting members. It has also tended to have more consistent updates, in part because of the larger number of players. However, with the shake-up at KI there was a promise to devote more time to their MMRPG games (Wiz and Pirates) so Pirate players are hopeful...

3. Which one has a better membership?/Like which membership is worth the money?

Both are worth the money in my opinion. If you can only afford the time and/or money for one or the other, play both for a couple of weeks to see which you like better.

4. and finally, I just want a cast of votes on which one you all think is better.

As a long-time player of both, I would have to say I much prefer Pirate. As the second game, KI kept most of what is best about Wizard and made a lot of improvements. There are a large number of reasons why I like Pirate better, but the number 1 absolutely most important is that Pirate can be played solo, where Wizard really cannot. Mind you, it is fun teaming up pirates, but you don't have to.

Without going into detail, I also prefer Pirate101 to Wizard101 because Pirate's combat system is more active* and allows for a considerable variety of tactical problems without having to resort to the "cheats" that become increasingly common and annoying the higher you go in Wizard101.

*Let's face it, as wizards we and our opponents politely stand around in a circle taking turns casting spells. As pirates we and our brave crews dodge and weave and sneak attack and shoot and hack and stab and lob bombs and charge and retreat and generally have a lot of action going on.

I also have a few more questions:

4: When you're on Pirate101/Wizard101 and you are not a member, in which one can you access more areas?

5: Which game is easier to beat? I want a game that takes me a while to finish.

6: Do they have the same number of schools, or does one have more than another?

Thanks, Storm Buffalo

I guess I'm a standout. I've tried Pirate a few times over the years. It's prettier looking and the way the quest book works is nice. I don't like the combat system. It's a matter of preference. The main difference being that Pirates adds the components of movement and range to battle. I can see where others might like a more active and engaging combat. If I want that there's loads of combat games out there. There aren't many other games like Wizard101.

4: When you're on Pirate101/Wizard101 and you are not a member, in which one can you access more areas?

Can't say. I am a member with both games.

5: Which game is easier to beat? I want a game that takes me a while to finish.

Not much difference until you are probably in the 60s level wise. At that point Wizard becomes harder in that you begin to encounter some Bosses whose cheats require specially-constructed decks, multiple wizards, etc. (and again, to me, the fact that some Wizard bosses require multiple wizards is a flaw in the game). But in normal fights, including most bosses, I think the difficulty/challenge is about the same.

6: Do they have the same number of schools, or does one have more than another?

Pirate has five classes. Two of them are melee specialists, and three classes hold back while their crew melee. More specifically:

The Privateer specializes in buffing his or her crew as they fight - healing them, increasing their chances of critical hits, making them better at dodging, etc. Privateers are the best healers in Pirate.

The Musketeer. A specialist in ranged warfare (shooting the enemy and dropping bombs on their heads).

The Witchdoctor. Also a ranged warfare expert. Witchdoctors have fewer area-effect attacks than musketeers, but are better at healing themselves when they take damage (like necromancers in Wizard, they have attacks that give them half of life drained from targets).

The Buccaneer. Lots of hit points and armor, the bucky's job is to run straight into melee and hit people, hard.

The Swashbuckler. The second of the melee types, the swashbuckler is more lightly armored and generally has fewer hit points, but is fast and dodgy and fond of sneak attacks.

Because there are only five classes of pirates, on a single account you can have one of each, and double up on your favorite. Sadly, on your Wizard account there will be one school you cannot play.

Seethe42: "The main difference being that Pirates adds the components of movement and range to battle."

I think the most fundamental difference between the two games is indeed the combat mechanics. Basically, Wizard101's combat is based on the collectible card game mechanic. You build decks. In a fight, I play a card; they play a card. I play a card; they play a card. Repeat.

Pirate's combat system is based on tabletop skirmish games, traditionally played with miniature figures (many role-playing games, like D and D, borrow heavily from skirmish games as well). So my pirate, his pet*, and three of his crew all move and attack independently, as do their opponents. Everyone interacts with the terrain. You can take cover from shooters, dodge around traps, etc.

I suspect that whether we like Wizard or Pirate better depends more on whether we like the CCG type game or the skirmish type game better more than any other factor. Myself, I played Magic the Gathering for a couple of years, but soon became bored with it. I have been playing miniature skirmish games for 40 years and I still love them.

*Your active pet has a chance of showing up to fight every round in combat. Once the pet shows up, it stays until the fight is over or it is taken out of action. Pets run and attack independently in a fight - you do not control them. With your crew, you control them, giving them specific orders every turn as you do your pirate.

6. Wizard101 has 7 schools, pirate101 has 5 but you don't need multiple accounts for pirate101 because of this.

1) Wizard 101 - it's been around longer and KI hasn't concentrated on new content for Pirates for years
2) Wizard 101
3) ?? As far as price? bonus to membership? To me they are pretty much equal.
4) They are about equal, but I'd say Wizard
5) Neither. Both have completely different gameplay and strategies. I have found Wizard easier, to a certain level, but with all the content, you're not going to get through it overnight.
6) There are more schools in Wizard, with 7 possible but you can only have 6 wizards on one account. Pirates is different in that there are less schools, but you can have more pirates.

You need to play both before making a decision. Both play for free as you know. Only you can decide what game is best for you. We all have our favorite; this is your choice.

Wizard 101 is a heck of a lot longer than Pirate 101, and it tends to make you hold back on quests more often due to difficulty (in my experience).

Thanks for all the help you guys. I've decided I'm gonna stay with wizard and get a membership there. I will try pirate, but I don't think I'm gonna officially become a member until they add more content. I hope I see you all in the spiral. And again, thanks for the help.

That's not really true. In most worlds in w101 you get 2-3 zones per purchase. It's only the early worlds that have single zones.

I have been in love with Pirate101 since it was released... It was so fun!

But then...they added an update that when one of your companions died, that you can't use them for eight hours, and if you want to use them you have to have to pay gold or your companions will be very weakened.
*rantover*

And the new "world", no just no.

Play wiz.

This thread seems to be devolving into an argument, so I'm going to go ahead and lock it for now.

In general, threads like these tend to border on trolling, and I may not allow them in the future.

Wizard101 and Pirate101 are BOTH great games, and I have played both to the end a couple of times. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite, and as exp613 asked, "Don't you think you'll get a slight bias posting this on the Wizard101 website?" This is very true.

As a moderator I've seen this same topic presented on both Wizard101 and Pirate101 websites a few times now, and I've never seen one come to a happy conclusion. Instead what I've seen is more of a division created when what I would love to see is more of a connection! Let's try to remember that we're all family here under the KingsIsle umbrella!

Thank you for your support and let's keep things positive.
