Dark Crow... 5 pips? Really?

Is it just me, or does it seem like this spell costs way too much? Sure it does damage, but not much; and the beguile lasts only one round! And at that, doesn't always appear to work.
I can see 4 pips, but seems 3 is more appropriate.
Compare Dark Crow with the Storm Bird... 400 damage, plus a shield, all for only 3 pips! And given the rarity of the Dark Crow vs the Storm Bird... What's up with that?

it works like this, ( beguile = 3 pips ) + ( 180 damage = 2 pips ) = 5 pips.
death doesnt do as much damage for their pips. now stormbird.
( 400 damage = 3 pips ) + ( 0 pip shield =0 pips ) = 3 pips. besides beguile can be helpful if used right.

Hanable is correct. If you time your crow cast against the right enemy, it could potentially net you a temporary companion that casts a Rank 8 spell.
