how do you find the serpent staff

When I go into the map room to gt the serpent staff it says to explore the platform. I go on the plat form I looked around 1 and a half hours and NOTHING the door to the Throne of fire is bloked and Profeser Winthrop does not say anything so I'm really confused. Please help me :-(

Check your quest list for that quest and look at the history (click on the question mark).

If nothing is there, you should have a quest to go find something (you'll need to fight an enemy) that's needed before you can use the staff.
