If you haven't already, you will be asked to complete a quest that introduces you to all the teachers in Ravenwood. Sir Arthur Wethersfield will be more than willing to teach you some Balance School spells until such time that you can go to Krokotopia.
If you want the prize, you have to build the ladder rung by rung. There are no shortcuts.
