Glad someone brought this up. Since i've been playing the quest helper always seems to turn off on its own, dont know why it happens. Maybe you should file a bug complaint to Mr.Lincoln.

Pressing T on the keyboard will turn the Quest Arrow on and off.

Most instances of the Quest Arrow disappearing are due to players pressing T on their keyboard, or not having a quest selected in their journal.
If you want the prize, you have to build the ladder rung by rung. There are no shortcuts.
